Domain Names

One of the most essential parts of a web site is your domain name. In techie terms a domain name is simply a URL (uniform resource locator), basically just the place on the internet where people can go & find your web site files, but domain names are so much more. Your domain name tells people what they should expect to see when they go to their site and your domain name can be used to find your web site on the internet’s major search engines.

Most people and businesses want to have their domain names associated with what their web sites are trying to accomplish so for instance if you have a company called Los Angeles Plumbing, you might want to have the domain name  LosAngelesPlumbing.com. Let’s assume though that that exact domain name was already taken, you might try to purchase another domain name like LosAngelesPlumbing.net or LosAngeles-Plumbing.com; yes you can have (-) dashes in your domain name and some people have proposed that the dashes actually make it easier for the search engine spiders to relate your web site with certain searches.

Almost all of the web hosts we have reviewed give away a free domain name with any web hosting package. This is great if you believe that you only need 1 domain name, but what happens if you need more than 1 domain. Usually web hosts are merely resellers of domain companies and if you purchase a large number of domains with a web hosts you will be over charged. We recommend that if you need to purchase more than 1 domain name that you go with a company like GoDaddy.
